WOMEN AT WORK
B. Kunju Lakshmee Amma, Trivandrum
Lakshmee worked as a maidservant for many years, but remains poor
because she is a devout Hindu who channels her limited income into
pujas (daily worship). An only child and widow without children,
she inherited her house from her parents, and is cared for by former
employers. Her ancestors were temple workers, participating in
elaborate religious activities and supported financially by the
temple. Some of these workers continue in their professions, but
for the most part temple workers have had to find new occupations. |
