WOMEN AT WORK
Stone Worker, Trivandrum, South India
Kerala is undergoing a major development, and this requires new
and better highways. Piles of rocks are deposited along roads under
construction, sometimes spilling over into front yards. Women of
all ages work throughout the day breaking up the rock into gravel
for road work. This is considered a good job for a woman: in our
terms, she enjoys a short commute, flexible hours, and a steady
paycheck. This woman is working just a few feet from her house,
seen in the background.
